What makes up the cost of a funeral
A traditional funeral bill is built from separate pieces. Knowing them helps you compare homes fairly and choose only what you want.
- Basic services fee: the funeral home's non-declinable charge for its staff, overhead, permits and paperwork. Every family pays this one, so it's the best single number to compare.
- Transfer into care: bringing your loved one from the place of death to the funeral home.
- Embalming and preparation: usually chosen when there will be a public viewing. Ask whether it's required for the services you want.
- Viewing and service: use of the funeral home's facilities and staff for a viewing, funeral or graveside service.
- Casket: often the largest single item. You may buy a casket elsewhere, and the funeral home must accept it.
- Hearse and transportation to the church and cemetery.
Cemetery costs are separate
The funeral home's price usually doesn't include the cemetery. Expect separate charges from the cemetery for the burial plot, opening and closing the grave, and often a burial vault or liner and a headstone or marker. Ask the cemetery for its price list before you decide. Compare plot and burial fees at Southern Utah cemeteries.
Packages vs. itemized prices
Many funeral homes offer packages that cost less than buying the same items one at a time. A package is a good deal only if you want everything in it. Ask to see the itemized General Price List next to the package so you can compare.
Your rights when comparing prices
Under the Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule, funeral homes must give you price information over the phone if you ask, and a written General Price List when you ask in person. You can choose only the items you want, and you can buy a casket or urn elsewhere.
