Pre-planning a funeral in Southern Utah
Planning ahead lets you make decisions calmly, record your wishes, and spare your family from guessing during a hard week. Here's how it works and what to ask.
Two things people mean by "pre-planning"
Pre-planning means writing down your wishes: burial or cremation, service preferences, music, where you'd like to rest. It costs nothing and can be done with any funeral home.
Pre-funding (pre-arrangement or "preneed") means paying ahead through a contract with a funeral home. These plans are typically funded through a trust or an insurance policy, and the terms vary by provider.
Questions to ask before you sign a pre-funded plan
- Is the plan funded by a trust or by an insurance policy, and who holds the money?
- Which prices are locked in, and which could change later?
- What happens if I move out of the area, or want to switch funeral homes?
- Can I cancel, and would I receive a refund? How much?
- What happens if the funeral home is sold or closes?
- Can I get a copy of the contract and the General Price List to review at home?
