How we collect and compare funeral prices
Southern Utah Funeral Homes is a privately operated consumer information directory serving Washington and Iron Counties, Utah. The website is operated by Derkas Holdings, LLC.
Our goal is to help families compare funeral and cremation costs using factual pricing information obtained directly from funeral homes and other identifiable sources.
Where our prices come from
- General Price Lists (GPLs) supplied directly by funeral homes
- General Price Lists publicly available on funeral home websites
- Funeral and cremation package pricing published on official provider websites
- Price quotations obtained directly from funeral homes
Where available, each listing identifies the source of the price, the effective date of the price list, and when the information was checked.
When we hold a GPL that is not publicly available online, we identify the source as "copy on file." We retain the source for verification but do not reproduce the original document.
When current pricing cannot be verified, we show it as unavailable rather than estimating a funeral home's price.
Cremation prices
Funeral homes build their cremation packages differently. Some include the cremation container and temporary urn; others charge for them separately. To show what a family will actually be charged, every cremation listing works the same way:
- Package price: exactly as it appears on the funeral home's price list.
- With minimum container and urn: if the package doesn't include them, we add the lowest-priced cremation container (for cremation with a viewing, the lowest-priced rental casket) and temporary urn on that funeral home's own price list.
- Total with state fees: adds the Utah burial-transit permit for cremation ($157) and two certified death certificates ($45), unless the package already includes them. Almost every family needs more than one death certificate.
Before listing anything, we read each funeral home's price list to see what its package includes; when a funeral home confirms an inclusion directly, we say so. If a price list doesn't show the price of a container or urn, we say so instead of guessing. Larger containers (for example, for a person over 300 pounds), upgraded urns and other choices cost more. These numbers are not quotes or custom prices. Families may provide their own container or urn; under the FTC Funeral Rule, a funeral home must accept them without charging a fee.
Burial packages
For burial we show the funeral home's package price, then the price range of its caskets and vaults or grave liners from its price list. We don't add a total, because the casket and vault are personal choices that vary widely.
What we note for each funeral home
Under each funeral home's prices we note only conditions that change what the package price means: whether it requires buying merchandise from that funeral home, the included transfer distance, and the date of the price list. We link to each funeral home's General Price List when it's posted online.
Fees that most funeral homes charge, such as credit card, insurance assignment and weekend or holiday fees, are described once in a general notice above our price comparisons rather than on individual listings. Many price lists don't mention them, and singling out the homes that do would penalize the most transparent ones.
Utah government fees
| Fee | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Burial-transit permit, when the body will be cremated | $157 | Utah Office of Vital Records fee schedule (effective July 1, 2026) |
| Burial-transit permit, for burial | $7 | |
| First certified death certificate | $35 | Southwest Utah Public Health Department |
| Each additional certified copy | $10 |
These are not quotes
Package prices come from each funeral home's price list, and the totals with state fees are our calculation using the method above. Neither is a quote or offer. Families should confirm the final itemized price directly with their selected funeral home.
Price discrepancies and updates
Funeral homes sometimes publish different prices in different places, or two prices for the same service. When we find a discrepancy, we ask the funeral home to clarify and update the listing with the confirmed price.
Prices may change without notice. We display effective dates so families can judge how recent the information is, and we keep the price lists and sources behind every comparison.
Featured listings and business relationships
A "Featured" designation does not represent a ranking of quality, affordability or customer satisfaction, and Featured placement does not change the order used in our price comparisons.
This directory may have business or professional relationships with certain listed providers. Such relationships are disclosed where applicable.
Corrections and updated price lists
We welcome updated pricing directly from funeral homes. If a funeral home identifies inaccurate information, supplies an updated GPL or requests a correction, we review the supporting documentation and update the listing with the new source and date.

Our objective is straightforward: accurate, clearly sourced funeral pricing that helps families make informed decisions.
